Ingredients

For the Sweet Potatoes

  • 4 cups Sweet Potatoes Aim for uniform 1/8-inch thick slices for even cooking.

For the Cream Mixture

  • 1/2 cup Brown Sugar Reduce quantity for a less sweet dish.
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon Optional: Add nutmeg for extra depth.
  • 1/4 teaspoon Nutmeg Optional: Omit if desired.
  • 2 cups Heavy Cream/Half-and-Half Substitution: Use whole milk with a tablespoon of butter for a lighter option.
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract Essential for balancing flavors.
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt Enhances overall flavor and balances sweetness.

For the Topping

  • 1/2 cup Pecans Swap with walnuts or slivered almonds for variation.
  • 2 tablespoons Butter Adds richness and enhances browning.

For Serving

  • 1 cup Whipped Topping/Mascarpone Optional but recommended for serving.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Peel and slice the sweet potatoes into 1/8-inch rounds. A mandoline works beautifully for uniform slices and even cooking.
  • In a bowl, whisk together heavy cream, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), vanilla extract, and salt until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
  • Grease a baking dish with butter. Layer half of the sweet potato slices at the bottom, then pour a portion of the cream mixture over that layer. Repeat with the remaining sweet potatoes and cream mixture.
  • Cover the dish with foil and bake at 375°F (190°C) for 35-40 minutes, or until the sweet potatoes are fork-tender and cooked through.
  • Carefully remove the foil. Sprinkle the top with chopped pecans and a bit of brown sugar, then dot with butter.
  • Bake uncovered for an additional 15-20 minutes, until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
  • Allow the dish to cool for about 10 minutes before serving. Top with whipped topping or mascarpone and a sprinkle of cinnamon for an extra touch of indulgence.
