Instructions

Preparation Steps

  • In a large mixing bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and instant yeast. Let this sit for about 5–10 minutes until it bubbles and becomes foamy.
  • Gently stir in olive oil, yogurt, and salt. Gradually add all-purpose flour, mixing until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms.
  • On a floured surface, knead the dough for 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp towel, and allow it to rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
  • Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into 6-8 equal pieces, rolling each into 1/4-inch thick ovals.
  • Heat a dry cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Cook each naan for 1-2 minutes until bubbles form and the bottom turns golden, then flip and cook for another minute.
  • Remove the naan from the skillet and brush each piece with melted butter or ghee. Serve warm.

Notes

For garlic naan, add minced garlic to the dough or brush with garlic-infused butter after cooking. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days or freeze for longer storage.
